Gabi, Between Ages 8 and 13

More info

A time-lapse portrait of young Gabi follows the transformation of her thoughts about life and herself. The child's free-spirited existence gradually awakens to the adult world, controlled by stereotypes that she does not want to accept. Eight-year-old Gabi doesn't care who's a boy and who's a girl and defines herself as a Capricorn. She doesn't understand why some toys are for boys and others are for girls. For her the world is one big playground, which she likes to confront with her wild imagination. The turning point comes when, at the age of 11, she moves from a big city to the countryside. She experiences loneliness, encounters the misunderstanding of others, and to top it all off, her body slowly begins to change. The intimate documentary captures a fragile rebirth and search for one's own identity, underlining the human right to go one's own way despite society's pigeonholes and expectations. Show more

One of the most promising stars among disabled alpine skiers in Poland, but also a scooter thief with troubled family relationships. This is Michał, the extraordinary hero of a genuine story about life’s hardships and overcoming obstacles. Michał has underdeveloped arms and legs, but he does not lack a sense of humour and the ability to live life to the fullest. After a difficult childhood and adolescence, he stands on the threshold of adulthood, in which the elite level skier not only has a chance to represent Poland at the Paralympic Games, but above all to find himself. Still, everyone around him seems to have a clearer idea of him than he does. Will Michał be able to leave the past behind and go his own way? Filmmaker Michał Kawecki has captured the protagonist’s ambiguity without deliberately focusing on the disability with which he lives. Show more

A House Made of Splinters

More info

The war in eastern Ukraine has divided families and caused many people to fall into darkness and addiction. Children whose parents are unable to take care of them are now waiting in an institution near the battle lines for a decision on their future. The film fully reveals the consequences of parental failure, which forces children to make adult decisions. Often the goal of the institute’s residents is not to get back to their parents, but rather to make the best possible impression on potential foster parents and thus avoid a state orphanage. This moving documentary follows stories in which the main aspects of childhood are erased. At the same time, however, it depicts the power of relationships, both with caregivers and with other children with traumatic family experiences. The film, in which Danish director Simon Lereng Wilmont revisits eastern Ukraine, received the award for best director in its category at Sundance 2022. Show more
